Projected 2012 Miami Marlins Lineup

Clave Jones —  December 6, 2011 — 11 Comments

Let’s take an early look at what the 2012 Miami Marlins lineup looks like with the addition of Jose Reyes.

Sure, the Winter Meetings have just begun, but I don’t think the Marlins land Albert Pujols. Heck, I’m still trying to process the fact that the $106 million they paid Jose Reyes is the sum of the entire last two season’s team rosters.

Just for fun:

In my mind I’m a big league skipper and I would try Logan Morrison hitting second. With Reyes on base distracting the pitcher and LoMo working the count while Hanley and Stanton wait behind him, I think it would be a lineup that would be fun to watch.

But the above is how I see Ozzie Guillen playing it. Remember, he is the most old school Of all current MLB managers and he loves to run. Fantasy baseball owners have to love the steals and run potential at the top of that lineup and the HR and RBI potential from 3-6.

While I don’t expect any big free agent signing I do see a trade coming from the Marlins. Chris Coghlan’s value is low and he’ll begin the year in Triple A. I think Bryan Peterson will be their 4th outfielder and be the main sub for Bonifacio, who has greatest real life value as a utility infielder.

If Bonifacio is out of the lineup I see All-Star Omar Infante (Think that’s funny? Look it up. He was an All-Star!) hitting second, despite my blogging advice to hit LoMo second.

One warning, the above projections use the mathematical process called my gut, but all in all, fun to think about for fantasy baseball owners.

What do you think about the new Miami Marlins lineup?

Clave, years ago, won the very first fantasy baseball league he participated in. He wasn't invited back to that league (sore losers), so he gathered 14 of his friends and began the TunaCorn Fantasy Baseball League, a 7x7 roto league. His wife is awesome and he has two little girls that don't like baseball as much as they like dressing up as princesses.

Let’s say they do land Pujols, what do they do with Gaby?!

I’m curious where you got your projections since it doesn’t look like Bill James and ZIPS isn’t out yet for the Marlins.

Also, do you have any idea what their estimated payroll looks like for 2012 and what they’re shooting for? I’ve heard anywhere from $80MM-100MM, but still can’t figure out how much is used.

The projections are from the gut. I wish I could say I used some sort of fancy mathematical projection and then planned for regression, but it’s solely my best guess.

The problem is that when I make my projections for the sake of my personal fantasy teams I use a combination of ZIPS, the collected fans projections, and my own (I hope) gut sense. I’ll take a combination of those three and project for my own teams.

I’ll start those next year once ZIPS is out on Fangraphs.

Bill James is actually up on fangraphs I think, but back in the day when I’d place a great deal of weight on his projections I found that he was consistently overly optimistic, and it would bite me in the butt when I’d draft my fantasy teams and they’d perform under projections. That’s the reason I went with my current system of ZIPS, fan average, and my personal projection.

I haven’t talked to the other writers on the site about this though. Not sure how we’ll make the determination on our site’s final projections. I’m guessing a combination of the three of our personal projections.

As to the Marlin’s payroll I don’t have a clue. I must admit that I’m still wrapping my mind around the fact that they’re on a spending spree. Totally out of character. It’s been fun for me to watch what they’re up to though.

I actually read an article earlier today on ESPN (and of course I can’t find it now0 about how the real worry about the Marlins is going big now and in 2-3 seasons having to sell off their parts because they are failing so badly finacially.

People are calling them the new Yankees but they look like the new Mets to me…

Yeah, Clave. Bill James’ projections are up on FanGraphs and ZIPS is not out yet, like you already mentioned. I read Bill James is extremely generous for young players who do not have much major league experience while veterans receive average estimations. I believe it. I’m looking forward to your projections/rankings for my upcoming fantasy (mock) drafts.

I agree, Nash. It’s mind boggling to see them spending so much for 2012 while they spent only $15MM in 2006, only six years ago. I remember reading today the Marlins will definitely not include any no-trade clauses in any new contracts this offseason, which definitely supports what you heard.

As for the Marlins’ payroll, I tried crunching the numbers this afternoon and came up with close to $92MM already spent for next season. I’m going to publish this in a new post on my blog on Thursday.

Hmm. Making sure that contracts don’t have a no trade clause. Interesting.

Well, someone in the Marlin’s front office took a hit off something, but it sure has made for exciting Winter Meetings.
